Here's a big thanks to Simon and the guys at the Specialized Concept Store for helping us to prepare the bikes and for supplying some great Specialized gear.

Rider Profile

Name: Jon Wadelton
Nick Names: Jonnie, Utah
DOB: 25 September 1972
Disciplines: Road cycling; the odd pub pool comp; riding whilst a bit rough on a Saturday morning, usually after said pool comp...
Bikes: Specialized S-Works Tarmac E5, Giant TCR 2 modified for touring.
Favourite Specialized product: S-Works Ti Toupe Saddle.
Results resume: St Kilda crits - 2nd and a 3rd in “D” grade and a couple of top 5s at the Kew crits. I'm waiting for the right moment to unleash my true potential!
Tour de Fat Goal: I'd like to get the tent put up without serious injury to myself or those in the vicinity... Having said that, with all of the riders thrown out of the Tour de France, maybe I should offer to make up the numbers in that ride instead!

Rider Profile

Name: Dave Sewell
Nick Names: Choifa, Captain Rude
DOB: 13 October 1972
Disciplines: Road cycling, beer consumption (I’m very good at that) and touring in stripy leggings…
Bikes: Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL, Specialized Skunk-Works SL Touring
Favourite Specialized product: Aside from the bike, the Decibel helmet
Results resume: 2nd Preston Trophy Handicap, St Kilda crits: 2nd “C” Grade, and a few places in “D” grade when I started. I once rode up l’Alpe d’Huez with panniers one hour slower than Lance Armstrong, but I’m not sure this is altogether something to shout about…
Tour de Fat Goal: I'd like to get over all of the mountains without having to walk it and find some good home-made booze along the way.

Rider Profile

Name: Andrew Royal
Nick Names: Choc, Choifa
DOB: 11 September 1972
Disciplines: Road cycling, climbing like a mountain goat (so I’m told), I’m pretty good at beer drinking too…
Bikes: Avanti San Remo Pro
Favourite Specialized product: BG Sport Road Shoes
Results resume: I can’t be arsed with racing. Maybe next year… Obviously I’d win if I did!
Tour de Fat Goal: This year I'm just hoping to get to Paris in one piece and drink beer in at least three different countries; after all, I'm an athlete.

The Outline

Ahhh…. Vienna! The beautiful imperial city on the banks of the River Danube sits and waits expectantly for us to arrive. It is almost two years since I left Portsmouth, UK on a ferry bound for Normandy where I would begin my first cycling adventure around France and now it is time for the second instalment: a journey from Vienna to Paris. In those two years since the first edition of “Le Tour de Fat”, I have moved from the UK back to Melbourne, Australia and managed to pass on the cycling bug to two old school mates, Jon Wadelton and Andrew “Choc” Royal.

And so “Le Tour de Fat” is on again and this time I have some company. Come 4 July this year I will be departing Vienna for a five-week, 2100km cycling odyssey in the company of Jon and Choc. Once again Tommy Henry will be piloting the support vehicle and arranging the petanque tournaments.

The basic plan is to cycle from Vienna to Paris via Germany, Switzerland and the French Alps. We’re not actually sure exactly how far it is from Vienna to Paris and we’ve decided not to put too much effort into finding out. This may seem contrary to any attempt to organise an adventure of this stature, but we feel some things are best left alone and the distance we must ride each day falls neatly into that category.

So, it is time. The bikes are prepped and ready, some light exercise and preparations have been undertaken by the cyclists and Tommy has finalised the AA European Road-Side Assist and bought a miniature bar fridge for the support car. We’re ready to go!

STAY TUNED FOR RIDER PROFILES AND IMPORTANT DATES.
